Making The Most Of Your Mouth

By Devon Monache

It smiles, laughs, sings, speaks words of love, and puckers for a kiss. Unfortunately, all these activities take a toll over the years.

The first place most women begin to see lines and wrinkles is near their mouth. The skin around the mouth moves like any facial skin; it folds and creases when we make use of it. The lower half of the face is often damaged more by sun, even for those who take care to use sunblock, visors and hats. Put these factors together and eventually you get wrinkles.

Unfortunately, when people look at us, their eyes focus on two things: our eyes and mouth. Wrinkles can appear worse when wearing colourful lipstick, because it attracts more attention to the mouth. Most people find that the changes radiate from the mouth toward the cheeks and chin, and as collagen is lost, the jawline becomes soft and saggy.

It's not all awful news though. Thankfully, we have some remedies.

Traditionally, cosmetic practitioners have had less tools to deal with problem areas around the mouth. Surgical procedures like face lifts do not fix flaws in skin near the lips, and even when done properly, there is a sharp contrast to the otherwise tight facial skin. Botox in small quantities can help reduce aggressive lip pursing, but can't treat etched in lines and wrinkles.

Collagen production decreases when we get older. Years of damage from the sun and other factors add up, and the collagen breakdown process happens even faster. So, we get wrinkly, lined skin in the end. Voluminous lips become a thing of the past. To begin to address the problem, we must avoid UV damage from the sun, keep the body hydrated and nourished, and use omega-3 supplements as well as antioxidants. Fortunately, subtle amounts of filler can help restore natural contours, and gently smooth some fine lines.

Studies show that voluminous lips can affect perception of a woman's age as much as wrinkles can. The volume in your lips starts to decline as early as in the mid-30s. The question often asked by patients is, "How can you create a natural-looking, full lip without overdoing it?"

"Duck face" is a common worry, and we agree nobody should have this look! Filler can be added in increments to create a natural line around the mouth, if the injector has experience.

Sometimes, it is hard to know where your limit is. Small lips can only be changed so much.

There is more to this than just filling lines around the mouth though. There is a fine balance in the relationship between the face and the mouth. It's important to have an injector who considers this artistically and knows about the anatomy of the face. It is vital to find an injector with experience and artistic talent.
