Treating Acne With Chemical Peels

By Marlene Ataine

Although for some it is mild with only a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often, almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point. In more severe cases though, the acne can be a variety of spots called whiteheads or blackheads, or even worse they can be large red, inflamed spots termed cysts. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. The pores (tiny holes) in human skin are connected to oil glands underneath it. Follicles (small canals) connect the glands to the pores. Sebum is an oily liquid produced by these glands. Dead skin cells are brought to the surface of the skin by the sebum carrying them through the follicles. From the follicle, out of the skin, a small hair grows. Oil accumulates under the skin when these follicles get blocked, resulting in pimples. During puberty, hormonal changes can cause excess oils in the skin, so acne is common in teenagers. Adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne, so it's not just teenagers who suffer from acne.

For some adults, breakouts are a result of hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones). But an imbalance in both male and female hormones (estrogen) can also cause breakouts. This can happen during a woman's pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Occasionally, some cosmetics or medications like corticosteroids can also cause acne to develop.

A very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne is a chemical peel. A chemical peel exfoliates your skin; dirt is cleansed from the skin, and dead skin cells which are clogging the pores are removed. This reduces the formation of acne pimples and spots. Chemical peels may also help to reduce some of the skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne.

Chemical peels are a very cost effective option for acne treatment. This acne treatment is also very safe. When applied to the affected areas, superficial chemical skin peels remove the dead skin cells by exfoliating and cleansing the top layers of the skin. A course of six peels is usually recommended, each performed at least one week apart. This will result in a noticeable improvement in the skin texture and visibly reduce the amount of acne breakouts.

Only a credible skin care clinic should be approached for your acne treatment chemical peel. Before you have chemical peels to treat your acne, obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type by consulting a reputable clinic.
