When I first started exercising in order to get in shape, I had a terrible time gaining control over my food choices. I did start to get regular exercise in the form of running with my dog around the neighborhood, or playing tennis a couple times a week, but I was still eating a lot of fast food and snacking on unhealthy items like potato chips and cookies.
After a couple weeks when I got back on the scale, I was shocked when my weight hadn't moved a bit. I felt like I was in better shape, and even though I thought I looked a little better in the mirror, but the scale does not lie. Even with my regular workouts, since my food options continued to be unhealthy, my weight was not improving.
This is what usually happened, when I first started working out, on the way home from the tennis courts, or while I was showering after running, I would convince myself that since I worked out, I earned the right to get a double bacon cheeseburger, a XL breakfast burrito, or something else along those lines.
My thinking was "Well, you worked out Greg so you can eat whatever you want now!". However as you can see, even with my regular workouts, I was not losing the weight I wanted so I needed to revise my thinking and my game plan.
I was determined to be successful losing weight this time, so I started to focus on the choices I made for my meals. I found that when I took the time to plan out what I was going to eat and start cooking and preparing my food I did much better when it came to making wise choices for my meals.
This really helped keep me eating in a healthy manner and also helped keep me from stopping at the local fast food spots to pick up a meal that was far too fattening and not conducive to a healthy life. Knowing exactly what I was going to cook/prepare helped keep the temptation to eat unhealthy to a minimum.
The next time you are in a similar predicament, don't convince yourself that just because you exercised you now have the right to eat whatever you want. This is not the mentality you want to have since it will hold you back from truly achieving your goal. Instead, after you are done working out, try and focus on healthy food and drink options for the remainder of the day.
You will find that if you continually maintain this type of control and restraint, you will lose weight each and every week and in turn be more inspired to continue onward striving to achieve your overall goal.
