When It Comes to Obesity, Personal Trainers Have It Wrong!

I hate to start off 'going negative' but it is illustrative and appropriate to reduce to the point of absurdity the approach used by personal trainers in general and the clown trainers on the TV show "The Biggest Loser" specifically.
Everybody wants to make a buck on the plight of the overweight. The Purposefully Primitive approach, to use an old hackneyed analogy, is to teach overweight individuals how to fish rather than sell them fish. There is an obesity epidemic in America. As pointed out in a recent New York Times article, 30% of the population is obese, obesity being defined as 30% (or more) body fat.
A 200-pound obese person holding a 30% body fat percentile would carry 60-pounds of fat. If that same individual carried a 40% body fat percentile (not uncommon) they would have 80-pounds of fat to haul around on a daily basis. Hold a pair of 30 or 40 pound dumbbells in each hand to give your self an idea of how much weight this represents in real terms. Body fat is not near as dense as iron so the space on the body needed to carry body fat is voluminous.
How to melt off adipose (fat) tissue is the subject of great controversy within the fitness community. One element of the obesity solution is the use of cardiovascular exercise to mobilize and oxidize stored body fat.
Personal trainers and fitness experts have a huge collective blind spot in that they continually mistake exercise mode for cardio method. What is the goal of cardio exercise? The systematic elevation of the heart rate for a protracted period of time on sustained basis: the benchmarks are frequency, duration, intensity.
Fitness experts force clients to become adept at a mode of exercise they are biased towards, despite the fact that the mode, jogging, is injurious, ruinous and unnecessary.
Coming soon! "The Obesity Solution" is designed to help overweight men and women physically transform themselves into healthier, thinner, more fit individuals. Designed by Marty Gallagher, a world champion coach and former washingtonpost.com fitness columnist, he will take you by the hand to help you achieve permanent fat loss.

Obesity in America - The Growing Epidemic!

Obesity is a disease that affects approximately 60 million people in the United States, where women are especially affected. Over one-third of women between the ages of 20 and 74 are obese, the majority of them being African American or Mexican American. With more and more pre-packaged food and less and less activity, the number of obese people in America has steadily increased since the 1960's.
But what is obesity? Many people think obesity means that a person is overweight, but that's not exactly true. An overweight person has a surplus amount of weight that includes muscle, bone, fat, and water. An obese person has a surplus of body fat. Most health professionals concur that a man is obese if he has over 25 percent body fat, and a woman is obese if she has over 30 percent. Women physiologically have more body fat than men, so that why there's a difference in percentage.
It is difficult to determine the exact percentage of body fat a person has, but estimates can be made in a number of ways. First, using a tweezer-like tool called a caliper, you can measure the thickness of skin folds on different points of your body and compare the results with standardized numbers. You can also use a small device that sends a harmless electrical current through your body and measures your body fat percentage. The most commonly used method to determine if a person is obese is to look at his/her Body Mass Index (BMI). A person with a BMI over 30 is considered to be obese, and a BMI over 40 is considered to be severely obese. It's important to remember though that BMI could be misleading in pregnant or lactating women and in muscular individuals.
With obesity, comes the increased risk of diseases such as high blood pressure, Type II Diabetes, heart disease, and breast, colon, and prostate cancer. In addition, obesity has been linked to mental health conditions such as depression or feelings of shame and low self-esteem. Health experts say that even losing 10 to 15 percent of your body weight can dramatically decrease the risk of developing these serious conditions. In addition, many obese people are discriminated against and targets of insults and other verbal abuse.
A number of factors, such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, genetics, and certain medical disorders, cause obesity, but it can be conquered. One major obstacle to being more physically active is motivation and accountability. Find a friend with similar fitness goals and begin a simple exercise program together. It takes time to see the results, but your health is worth it!

Obesity And Emotional Trauma

It has been said by many a therapist that we hide our pain and hurt behind our fat. It has been my experience working with a new process that in fact the fat "is" the pain and hurt. Let me explain.
As I mentioned, many therapists have believed that individuals unconsciously make themselves unattractive or unappealing to others by putting on the pounds. Although this may have some truth to it, it has been my experience working with individuals that in fact the emotional trauma actually "materializes" in a manner of speaking.
A new process called the Mind Resonance Process(TM) (MRP) which I have written about extensively about here in this ezine has the ability to permanently release negative beliefs and traumatic memories from one's mind/body in a relatively short time.
One of the unexpected and recurring surprises I have had over the last several years facilitating change in people's lives is that as they release their trauma they also in a very short time shed huge amounts of weight and all without dieting or any change in their daily routine. The fat essentially disappears!
One example of an individual shedding over 40 lbs in a matter of 2 to 3 weeks was not only a surprise to me but also to her. After close questioning she noted that there had been no change in her diet, exercise routine, or eating habits.
At first I was not sure what to make of this and wrote it off. After many other clients started experiencing the same thing I began to realize the connection between emotional trauma and obesity.
I explain it as follows.
When an individual experiences a trauma and it becomes "embedded" in their mind/body whenever they recall it they often will re-experience the hurt that goes with the trauma. What they also experience are feelings of tiredness, emotional gravity (i.e. heaviness) and a draining of their vital life energy.
It literally feels to them as if they are carrying something that is dragging them down. This is not dissimilar to carrying extra weight on board. In fact now it turns out that the "extra weight" is actually the trauma in "material form".
When an individual experiences the MRP process and releases the trauma they repeatedly feel emotionally lighter, less burdened, more energized, more peaceful, and more joyful. In addition they feel physically lighter. As strange as this may seem this latter feeling is almost spontaneously associated with a measurable weight loss.
The conclusion I am coming to may sound strange but it is something that I am in the process of researching. It is as follows:
Emotional trauma not only brings one "down" emotionally" it also brings one "down physically" by literally turning into fat.
When the trauma is released (which occurs in minutes with MRP) the fat is transformed into energy. In other words what is happening here is that mass density is decreasing while energy density is increasing.

I want to outline the plan of this diet to lose weight in this article, so there you go.
Day 1 puts strong emphasis on consuming absolutely any fruits you want. You should by all means eat only your soup and the fruits during the first day to create the basis for your future progress. This is of great significance. Besides, you are allowed to drink cranberry juice or water in large quantities.
On day 2 of this program you are free to eat any raw or cooked vegetables you wish, however you should exclude dry beans, peas and corn from your meals. Once again, this is of great significance, if you want to use this diet to lose weight. The third day presents you the unbelievable opportunity of eating all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want or can. Use your chance!
On the fourth day you must eat eight bananas and drink up to 8 glasses of milk in addition to eating your soup.
Day 5 is not too strict in terms of food, since you are allowed to eat beef and tomatoes. About twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomatoes can be eaten by you on this day which is supposed to nourish you quite much. Be ready to drink quite a lot of water in order to wash the uric acid off your body.
On day 6 you are allowed eat to your heart's content as much beef and vegetables as you can. This is the best day of this diet, the celebration of your patience and progress, so to say. Have I already said that this is the easiest diet to lose weight?

To Diet or not to Diet, That Should Be The Question!

Diet information is everywhere. In advertisements, on TV, in magazines; the bookstores are crammed with books on many different diet options - The South Beach Diet, The Atkins Diet, Weight Watchers, The Cabbage Soup Diet. The message is 'you should think about your weight'. If you aren't already thinking about dieting, you will be before long.
Most of the clients that come to see me want to lose weight. They have typically tried out a few diet options, but still haven't achieved what they are looking for.The big question is what are they looking for?
It all starts off with that glance in the mirror. What we see staring back at us is often an image we don't like or at least we don't rave about. The instant reaction too often can be - 'I need to go on a diet'.
You don't like the package, so you need to alter it in some way. But the truth is that often it is the 'packaging' that is distorting the picture - distorting our image of ourselves and not you (the package).
Consider this: Everything about you is perfect as it is, and has a purpose. Your shape, your height, your size, your hair colour, your eye colour, the shape of your features, and the size of your knees - they all combine to create you. Having a negative personal image can lead to weight gain or weight loss. Most eating disorders occur as a result of a negative body image.
Your packaging - or your style and your way of dress - has a huge impact on your personal image - how you see yourself, how much you like the way you look and ...how large or small you look.
Just imagine how you feel when you are presented with a gift that is packaged with the fanciest ribbon, shiniest paper and with care and attention. In fact, it almost doesn't matter what is inside the package! It is the same for you, your packaging has an impact on yourself - how you feel about yourself, your confidence levels, and how others treat you.
So before you go on a diet, please consider the following:
Are you wearing clothes that don't fit you?
Squeezing into an item of clothing is just plain unflattering and although you think you can stay in denial of your true size, every other person that passes you in the street will notice that you are squeezing in. You will only draw more attention which can make you feel more sensitive about how you look.
More importantly wearing clothes that are bigger than you or too small for you will make you look bigger.
Tips
Go through your wardrobe and clear out all items that don't fit you. Be ruthless! You don't have to throw them away. But putting them in another area - like the top shelf - so they are out of visibility will ensure you a) don't wear them and b) you don't reinforce your negative concerns each time you wear them!
Cut out the size tags. This will take your mind off what size you are wearing, and hopefully you will forget all together and start enjoying what you wear
And of course buy clothes that fit! You think that's just common sense? Well it is one of the biggest wardrobe mistakes that people can make!
Are you wearing clothes that suit your body shape?

Wearing the wrong shape clothes can add pounds. A square shaped t-shirt in structured cotton will cut off any curves you have, either roll up to expose your stomach or make your torso look like a square box. Oh no! However that is what we can mistakenly go for. The same goes for a pair of jeans - a key item in all our wardrobes. They are often cut to fit a squarer body shape.
Tips
Jeans for a curved hipline - drop the waistline but ensure you have a larger waistband, and/or no back pockets. Also, opt for jeans with stretch. This will follow your natural contours better. For men: go for jeans with a pleat around the waistband to accommodate a softer belly line.
Jeans for a narrow hipline - most jeans look a dream on you, but ensure you opt for structure. Stretch could make you look like you have puppy fat.
T-shirts for a curve - use softer fabrics with drape and soft stretch that have a curve in the cut. Avoid front pockets, too high a neckline, square short sleeves. Instead, feminine touches - flowers, soft textures and chiffon, depending on your style. For men: go for softer fabrics.

T-shirts for angles - use structured fabrics, stripes and lines, boyish cuts, and heavier stretch. You can do pockets and sheer looks.
Are you investing in yourself?
If you are having concerns about your weight then you may have put a stop on your wardrobe spending 'until you lose weight'. This is just plain unfair on yourself. It can only lead to you feeling more miserable if you are living in three outfits and haven't got anything you feel really good in. You may feel it will force you to take your diet wishes seriously, but again is dieting what you need, or what anyone needs for that matter?
Tips
Go out now and buy yourself something that you feel really good in, that suits you, that is perhaps an extravagance and that looks slightly sexy or suave. Regardless of whether you have been starving your wardrobe. This doesn't require emptying your wallet. The action in itself, spending some quality time for you to value yourself, will improve your spirits.
For women: Go out and buy some new make-up. A fresh gloss for the lips - natural or bright - whatever is your preference, and a shimmer or rouge for the cheeks. Invest in good mascara and some colour or base for the eyes.
For men: invest in a new shampoo, a facial lotion and an upgrade your shaving system.

Consider this: You don't need to lose weight. But you do want to be healthy and have a positive self-image. If you achieve the latter, your own appearance and weight will find its natural way.
Being healthy is mostly achieved by finding balance. Balance between the stress in your life and the peace you have; a balance between your nutrients and your addictions; a balance between being active and being passive. You also want to be well.
With the amount of toxins we have in our foods and environment and the amount of pressure we have living in the Noughties, your health is very important. Dieting can be unhealthy. What is healthy is loving yourself for how you are, appreciating that as you age your body will change, and that a healthy self-image is far more important than whether you can fit into a size 2. In fact, that is quite dangerous.
Dieting can be a quick fix - you see some results so you feel like you have dealt with the problem. But if you are not happy with your own personal image, then weight loss or not, you will shortly be back in front of that mirror complaining about how you look again.

10 Good Reasons to Use More Olive Oil

Every day there seem to be more and more reasons why extra virgin olive oil should be a part of everyone's diet.
Here are 10 good reasons to eat more olive oil:
  • Wow! Exquisite taste.
Good extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is excellent when consumed raw to appreciate its aroma and taste. Its flavour extends from delicate to robust and more people are discovering its interesting taste characteristics.
  • It's a great seasoning.
Think of it as essential seasoning. Like salt and pepper, always have oil on your table at mealtimes. One drop can add extra aroma and taste not just to pasta and salads but sauces, soups, stews, fresh and cooked vegetables, grilled fish and roast meat.
  • It can help you lose weight.
Lowering calories in your diet and replacing bad saturated fats with monounsaturated, found in EVOO, may help your weight loss. It has been demonstrated that an olive-oil-rich diet leads to greater and longer - lasting weight loss than a low-fat diet.
  • You may be healthier and live longer.
Containing a wide variety of valuable antioxidants that are not found in other oils, rich in vitamins and monounsaturated fats, olive oil has been shown to help to control blood pressure, cholesterol level, prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some type of cancer and other illnesses and conditions.
  • You will look good.
Including EVOO in your daily diet helps your skin stay healthy and beautiful. It has a large proportion of vitamins A, D, K and E and has a strong antioxidant effect, protecting against cell oxidation and the free radicals. It's a good aid to treat skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis and eczema.
  • Your children may be healthier.
EVOO plays a key role in foetal development during pregnancy and a shortage may have pernicious effects on the baby's subsequent development. Studies show that the post-natal development of babies of mothers who consumed olive oil when pregnant is better in terms of height, weight, behaviour and psychomotor reflexes.
  • Strengthen your immune system.
Olive oil intake helps the immune system against external attacks from bacteria, infection, micro-organisms and viruses. EVOO is high in polyphenols, chlorophyll, carotenoids and vitamin E - antioxidants key to the immune system strengthening and protection from the damaging effects of free-radicals.
  • It may improve your memory.
Studies have shown that olive-oil-rich diets and monounsaturated fats, found in high amounts in olive oil, could help prevent memory loss, associated with ageing and in diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia.
  • It can ease aches and pains.
Scientists have revealed that olive oil can act as a natural painkiller. It contains a natural organic compound - oleocanthal - which acts like the anti-inflammatory pain killer ibuprofen.
  • It may improve the health of the entire population of the world.
The World Health Organization officially recommends that people across the world adopt the Mediterranean diet for better health and specifically suggests EVOO as the healthiest source of fat on the planet.

How to Deal With Obesity Simply and Effectively

Obesity is not an eating problem. Obesity is an emotional problem. We eat to give ourselves rewards. We eat to calm our nerves. We eat to stay busy. We eat to occupy our hands when we can't think of anything to do. We eat to punish ourselves. We eat because it gains us some attention. We eat because our society equates big with healthy in some cases. The kids love fast food; therefore I'm a good parent because I give them what makes them happy.
Obesity is triggered by thoughts that are harmful to you. We need calming; we need to be rewarded; we need to do something. Before obesity becomes debilitating we need to do something about it. There is a direct link between obesity and diabetes, obesity and heart attacks, obesity and strokes - and any of those can kill you.
So agree with me that obesity is triggered by thoughts. Check it out for yourself. What is the first thing you do before grabbing a bag of chips or a soft drink? You THINK, "That looks good;" or "I need that (whatever)." You do this time and again throughout your day and the fat builds up and up and up!
So, when thoughts are harmful to us, the answer is simple: DON'T think those thoughts!
The next time the desire to eat something pops into your mind, I want you to immediately say to yourself, out loud, "I'm not going to think about that." If it recurs, say it again.
I think you'll discover that the negative thought will go away. It will go away every time you demand that it go away.
This solution is so simple that many people have trouble accepting it. The most effective way to control harmful thinking is to say to yourself out loud, "I will not to think about that." Do it as often as necessary and do it out loud.
Someone said, "That's easier said than done."
Not really. You have the innate authority to decide what you want to think about. If a thought is harmful to you, don't think that thought. It's your choice. As you make that choice again and again, your subconscious remembers how you like to respond and will start to make your response automatically. It's amazing how quickly this can happen.
Let me share three simple rules that you can use to teach your subconscious to help you even more to deal with your obesity:
  1. When you're tempted to step on the scale (another thought), say out loud to yourself, "I only weigh myself once a week." Set a time that's convenient, say Sunday morning before you dress for church. If you think about weighing yourself any other time, say "I only weigh myself once a week." This will keep you from being discouraged on the days when you don't show any weight loss.

  2. If you are hungry, you must eat. Say to yourself, out loud, whenever it crosses your mind (but at least several times a day), "I eat when I'm hungry and no other time." But you must be honest with yourself. There's a difference in true hunger and simply wanting to eat something. If you ate a meal an hour ago, it is not logical that you are hungry again. Use this rule as often as required.

  3. If the family is sitting down to eat or you're going out with friends and you're not hungry, get yourself a cup of tea or a flavored beverage and enjoy the company. Don't let well-meaning people coerce you into eating with them. Say, "I'm really not hungry and when I'm not hungry, I do not eat anything at all, regardless of when or where I am." Be kind; be cordial; but be firm with your friends and with yourself.
When you have the urge to eat and you know that you're not hungry, you can drink a bottle of water or a cup of tea to ease the desire to eat.
Say these three rules to yourself, out loud, several times a day. Before long, your subconscious will be dealing with your thoughts of eating automatically.
Don't give in to the temptation to try helper fads. Rule 1 keeps you from discouragement. Rule 2 assures that you're getting enough food for good health, and rule 3 lets you enjoy life with family and friends without feeling guilty. You don't need anything else to help you. You're capable of doing this all by yourself by teaching your subconscious to work with you.
As a bonus, allow yourself to be a little proud of yourself every time you use the rules.
Nothing could be more effective than having your subconscious mind control your impulse eating for you before you even think about it.

I've Got MY Whole Life Riding on This "Paleo Diet"

I was amazed at what I found when I read a recent scientific study. The very "Target" of study was the Paleo Diet. The results entail a barrage of Health benefits. Many benefits are of a growing need. Health Benefits such as, improved blood pressure, (which applied to me) at one time I was 190/100, SCARY! Combine that with a Cholesterol Score around 175. My Life hung in a very unpredictable balance.
Needless to say I have family who could gain from a healthy drop in natural insulin secretion, as well as an increase of insulin sensitivity.
And who doesn't want to lower body fat and have Clearer Skin?
So the question becomes, "How can the Paleo Diet directly benefit me"? Aside from eating whole foods high in fiber, low in salt what else is in it for me?
This is a look through the lens from the outside in to understand the mechanics of eating paleo, from a consumer point of view.
Suddenly the answer hit me like a sack of jackfruit. "Maybe I've found the solvent to my own personal Hypertension, and Cholesterol concerns". Have I hit the bulls-eye, or am I missing something?
I am not an expert Paleo Dietician. I am a social media user whom respects Paleo Practices. So what we have here is the sum of what my growing resources and studies are allowing me to display for you at this time. My goal is to help curious onlookers to get valid information from the right places.
Being an avid cyclist, I need lean proteins, natural sugars, fats starches and carbs in a certain Ratio. And the organic nature of hunter diet gatherer makes this nutrition so essential to my metabolism. Matter of fact, I find myself with leftover energy after I have tacked on the miles.
I am now in the habit of eating many small meals a say. So I hover around a diet of Tuna, Salmon, Halibut, Trout, Swordfish. Antibiotic free lean Steaks, Free Range Chicken, Lamb, Turkey and Eggs.
Through small changes in my eating habits suggested in the Paleo Cookbooks. I've been able to carve up some Body fat. Regulate my cholesterol. And Most importantly that Blood pressure number is now looking "Real" good due to some well made decisions.
So I know this could be the answer to a prayer for someone who was on the same road as I.
