Help and Support for Obese Persons Who Are Afraid to Lose Weight

The purpose of this article is to provide emotional and motivational help for obese persons. One of the most difficult challenges that an obese person will likely ever face in their lifetime is the daunting challenge of losing weight. Obese persons who wish to undergo a lifestyle overhaul are likely plagued with questions such as these: Will I succeed in my weight-loss endeavour? Will I be able to go the whole way? If I have a relapse, will I be able to get myself back on track? How will I cope without comfort eating anymore? Will I need help with my weight loss? These are certainly legitimate questions. How about we go through them briefly together to help you to alleviate your fear of weight loss?
Will I succeed in my weight-loss endeavour?
Where there's a will there's a way. You have likely reached the point where losing weight has now become your number one priority in life (that's why you ended up at this page). Keep a list of all the reasons why losing weight is so important to you, and keep this list with you wherever you go, to remind you of your decision. Keep a determined attitude and decide that no matter what comes along (whether externally or internally), you will stick with your resolve.
Will I be able to go the whole way?
Make your new eating habits and exercise regime a lifestyle change, rather than a short-term weight-loss crash program. If you develop the mind frame that this is how you will live your life from now on, then you are more than likely to maintain it over the long-term. Be determined never to go back from your resolve. A determined person WILL succeed.
If I have a relapse, will I be able to get myself back on track?
Everybody has relapses - they are an inevitable part of the recovery process. Don't beat yourself up, accept what happened, and get back on track. Don't make your relapse an excuse to give up, rather, let it make you stronger and more determined than ever to get back on track and conquer your eating habits once and for all. Believe that you can get back on track and you WILL be able to do so.
How will I cope without comfort eating anymore?
You will need to find some new hobbies to pursue and come up with some long-term projects to keep you occupied. Don't isolate yourself, seek out the company of others, and join some local clubs or social groups so that you can keep busy. If you are having a strong desire to comfort eat, go for a long walk to calm down, or phone a close friend or family member to gain strength.
Will I need help with my weight loss?
Yes, you will need help with your weight loss - it should not be something that you should have to go through alone. Don't be afraid to ask for help - everybody needs help in their life at some time or another. In fact, everybody needs help with weight loss; it is not an easy task for anyone! So rest assured that you are not alone in your endeavor! Just make sure that you communicate regularly with close friends, family members and mentors so that they can help you to stay on track.
Losing weight will never be easy, but it can be achieved. There will always be new obstacles and challenges that arise that you won't be ready for, but you WILL be able to get past them and keep moving on. Don't be afraid to lose weight! You CAN do it - Just remember to stay determined, keep to your resolve, stay busy, don't isolate yourself, and most importantly, never give up. Replace your fear of weight loss with an indestructible resolve to lose weight no matter what may come your way! Obesity - Are You an Unconscious Overeater?

What do I mean by eating unconsciously?
Well basically many individuals who tend to over eat appear to go into some sort of a trance when they are overeating. Another way of saying this is that they are dissociated or not fully present. This is evident by the fact that they cannot truly feel, in the moment, what they are doing to themselves and to their bodies. What's more many have trouble even remembering what they ate during such periods. Try it yourself and you'll see what I mean.
Such unconscious habits tend to arise spontaneously and are often brought on by disappointing events in the present that trigger the emergence into consciousness old painful emotions or feelings from unresolved past traumatic memories or disappointments.
The tendency is for many individuals to try and "push" these old feelings "out of consciousness" by engaging various strategies. These include soothing themselves with:
1. Food.
2. Sex.
3. Drugs.
4. Cigarettes.
5. Work.
6. Television and computer games.
7. Etc.
Now because the use of food is one the earliest learned strategy for soothing one's self it has the tendency to be adopted early if early life trauma is present. It becomes especially ingrained, in my view, if one's parents used food as a way of soothing their children early on.
So the "self soothing" behavior then is essentially an activity that attempts to quench "unresolved" negative emotions that the individual continues to harbor within.
Unless these emotions are released and cleared once and for all they will continue to exert "pressure" on the individual to do something about their discomfort when they arise.
So you see this is why many weight loss programs fail i.e. they focus simply on the diet and leave out the root cause driving the emotional eating patterns.
Such emotional eating behavior can be released quickly, easily and permanently by individuals who are truly committed to doing so. This can now be done over the telephone employing a new modality called the Mind Resonance Process(TM) (MRP). To arrange an introductory consultation kindly visit the web link below.

When It Comes to Obesity, Personal Trainers Have It Wrong!

I hate to start off 'going negative' but it is illustrative and appropriate to reduce to the point of absurdity the approach used by personal trainers in general and the clown trainers on the TV show "The Biggest Loser" specifically.
Everybody wants to make a buck on the plight of the overweight. The Purposefully Primitive approach, to use an old hackneyed analogy, is to teach overweight individuals how to fish rather than sell them fish. There is an obesity epidemic in America. As pointed out in a recent New York Times article, 30% of the population is obese, obesity being defined as 30% (or more) body fat.
A 200-pound obese person holding a 30% body fat percentile would carry 60-pounds of fat. If that same individual carried a 40% body fat percentile (not uncommon) they would have 80-pounds of fat to haul around on a daily basis. Hold a pair of 30 or 40 pound dumbbells in each hand to give your self an idea of how much weight this represents in real terms. Body fat is not near as dense as iron so the space on the body needed to carry body fat is voluminous.
How to melt off adipose (fat) tissue is the subject of great controversy within the fitness community. One element of the obesity solution is the use of cardiovascular exercise to mobilize and oxidize stored body fat.
Personal trainers and fitness experts have a huge collective blind spot in that they continually mistake exercise mode for cardio method. What is the goal of cardio exercise? The systematic elevation of the heart rate for a protracted period of time on sustained basis: the benchmarks are frequency, duration, intensity.
Fitness experts force clients to become adept at a mode of exercise they are biased towards, despite the fact that the mode, jogging, is injurious, ruinous and unnecessary.
Coming soon! "The Obesity Solution" is designed to help overweight men and women physically transform themselves into healthier, thinner, more fit individuals. Designed by Marty Gallagher, a world champion coach and former washingtonpost.com fitness columnist, he will take you by the hand to help you achieve permanent fat loss.

Obesity in America - The Growing Epidemic!

Obesity is a disease that affects approximately 60 million people in the United States, where women are especially affected. Over one-third of women between the ages of 20 and 74 are obese, the majority of them being African American or Mexican American. With more and more pre-packaged food and less and less activity, the number of obese people in America has steadily increased since the 1960's.
But what is obesity? Many people think obesity means that a person is overweight, but that's not exactly true. An overweight person has a surplus amount of weight that includes muscle, bone, fat, and water. An obese person has a surplus of body fat. Most health professionals concur that a man is obese if he has over 25 percent body fat, and a woman is obese if she has over 30 percent. Women physiologically have more body fat than men, so that why there's a difference in percentage.
It is difficult to determine the exact percentage of body fat a person has, but estimates can be made in a number of ways. First, using a tweezer-like tool called a caliper, you can measure the thickness of skin folds on different points of your body and compare the results with standardized numbers. You can also use a small device that sends a harmless electrical current through your body and measures your body fat percentage. The most commonly used method to determine if a person is obese is to look at his/her Body Mass Index (BMI). A person with a BMI over 30 is considered to be obese, and a BMI over 40 is considered to be severely obese. It's important to remember though that BMI could be misleading in pregnant or lactating women and in muscular individuals.
With obesity, comes the increased risk of diseases such as high blood pressure, Type II Diabetes, heart disease, and breast, colon, and prostate cancer. In addition, obesity has been linked to mental health conditions such as depression or feelings of shame and low self-esteem. Health experts say that even losing 10 to 15 percent of your body weight can dramatically decrease the risk of developing these serious conditions. In addition, many obese people are discriminated against and targets of insults and other verbal abuse.
A number of factors, such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, genetics, and certain medical disorders, cause obesity, but it can be conquered. One major obstacle to being more physically active is motivation and accountability. Find a friend with similar fitness goals and begin a simple exercise program together. It takes time to see the results, but your health is worth it!

Paying The Price for Obesity in Yet Another Way

There are a 2 issues here I would like to address:
Powerfully discriminating
It was unfair of the airline to suggest it was the passenger's fault they were obese

Powerfully discriminating: Yes it is. There are many reasons why the concept of body weight is painfully misleading & inaccurately judgmental.
Many of us in the health & fitness field implore people to look beyond BMI - a number based on weight. As much as the airline is altruistically contributing to fighting obesity (NOT) how about: very tall people, muscular builds, pregnancy, medical treatments... weight is not directly correlated with body fat. How bout skinny fat people - higher body fat, low body weight - yes I get it a kilo is a kilo - but don't say its to bring awareness to the obesity epidemic.
Fault: Why do we live in a world obsessed with fault - Sorry - fault leads to scapegoating, finger pointing & absolving ourselves of responsibility & the opportunity for personal growth & self betterment. Yes, there are many contributing factors to obesity, and yes, there are options for dealing with obesity. Fault is irrelevant - finding a go forward plan is very relevant.
Obesity is a chronic illness - as cancer, heart disease, alcoholism, arthritis... and yes there is always a silver lining... obesity is no exception. Chronic illnesses have medical & behavioral solutions. Hopefully we would not try & treat cancer or heart disease by ourselves - we seek guidance from health professionals.
We know obesity is a major contributor to all of our top lifestyle killers. Not only is it physiologically deadly, but obesity can be emotionally mortifying as well. As much as an obese person says "I have tried everything" yes - they easily could have tried everything they know - but the fact is...
there are many contributing lifestyle factors to obesity undiscovered, and is within personal power to lose the fat, get healthy. Help is needed to discover these issues.
We wouldn't treat cancer ourselves, please find out treatment options for obesity. People usually do think they are doing everything possible - just not true. Fact is, most people do not know what clean nutrition is, portion size, physical activity & what other lifestyle factors are fat loss saboteurs. That paradigm of diet, starve... not helping here.
Sustainable fat loss is a science to cure a diseased state, and should not be left in the hands of pop trends & fads. Understanding the fat cell is key here - but remember:
Fat cells do not go away, they only shrink
Fat cells give new meaning to "be fruitful & multiply"
Fat cells secrete nasty toxins, making sustainable fat loss very challenging

If an oncologist told us we needed surgery to remove a cancer or we would die, we do it. There are many circumstances where weight loss surgery is mandated equally to tumor removal. Again, obesity is a chronic illness - treat it accordingly. Get evaluated by an obesity surgeon who knows the many types of procedures available - because chances are there are many more procedures than you know, and many more procedures out there, but not available through local bariatric surgeons. Obesity is the leading cause of heart disease, cancer, diabetes... Treating obesity with the same passion & vigilance as cancer - that will save many thousands of lives. And yes... our health is our responsibility.
So let's ditch the guilt, blame, shame game. And Samoa airlines - please don't hide behind the gravity of the obesity epidemic as the noble excuse for higher revenues. Given current obesity numbers, yes it makes sense mathematically you would profit from such a policy. Your guilt of obesity is as shameful as the tobacco companies saying they are committed to reducing smoking - while their ways insidiously ensure increased addictions and profits.

The Generation of Obese Teenagers

There are many articles in the press about obese teenagers and even obese younger children and so my article on this issue is nothing new but the fact that it is something I have in front of me everyday motivated me as something I just had to write about. So I decided to write a series of articles on this particular issue. I see it everywhere, in the classroom, on the streets, in the shops, the village where I live... just everywhere. It is also an issue that really stood out to me when I came back from Spain some months ago to return to my position as lecturer at the college.
When we returned from Spain My daughters who are 16 and 17 set about catching up with old friends after a 2 year absence and we all noticed that most of them bar a few had put on substantial amounts of weight during those 2 years. Now let me step back here to assure you... I was not being judgmental on these teenagers as people, it was just impossible not to notice the difference that this period of time had made
My job as a Health lecturer and also the fact that I have lived a large proportion of my life so far out of the UK in South Africa allows me the liberty of being able to look at different cultures and their eating habits and way of life. When I returned from South Africa to the UK in 2001 I immediately noticed the deteriorating eating habits of the younger generation and had a hard time convincing my daughters of the benefits of healthy eating. When we moved to Spain in 2010 and returned in 2012 some 2 years later..I think they got what I had been talking about all those years earlier!
The message really hit home when they were able to compare the eating habits and weight issues in the UK with a different culture where the eating habits were more healthy and overweight teenagers were infrequent and not common place
So lets get the information right from the start. Many people think that being overweight is an appearance issue. Not so of course none wants to look "fat" but being overweight is actually a medical concern because it can seriously affect a person's health. All of have body fat and a few extra pounds are not going to do us any harm but when experts use the term overweight they are talking about much more than just a few pounds. There are very few people who are not aware of the health problems like Diabetes and heart disease that come with people overweight but the problems range much further. Being overweight can affect a persons joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels. All of these problems can impact a person's entire quality of life. More people are overweight today than ever before. We are experiencing an "obesity epidemic." So younger people are now developing health problems that used to affect only adults, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.
So how does one become overweight? its actually not as simple as you think... but then it never is. My next article will discuss the issues that result in weight gain.

How to Deal With Obesity Simply and Effectively

Obesity is not an eating problem. Obesity is an emotional problem. We eat to give ourselves rewards. We eat to calm our nerves. We eat to stay busy. We eat to occupy our hands when we can't think of anything to do. We eat to punish ourselves. We eat because it gains us some attention. We eat because our society equates big with healthy in some cases. The kids love fast food; therefore I'm a good parent because I give them what makes them happy.
Obesity is triggered by thoughts that are harmful to you. We need calming; we need to be rewarded; we need to do something. Before obesity becomes debilitating we need to do something about it. There is a direct link between obesity and diabetes, obesity and heart attacks, obesity and strokes - and any of those can kill you.
So agree with me that obesity is triggered by thoughts. Check it out for yourself. What is the first thing you do before grabbing a bag of chips or a soft drink? You THINK, "That looks good;" or "I need that (whatever)." You do this time and again throughout your day and the fat builds up and up and up!
So, when thoughts are harmful to us, the answer is simple: DON'T think those thoughts!
The next time the desire to eat something pops into your mind, I want you to immediately say to yourself, out loud, "I'm not going to think about that." If it recurs, say it again.
I think you'll discover that the negative thought will go away. It will go away every time you demand that it go away.
This solution is so simple that many people have trouble accepting it. The most effective way to control harmful thinking is to say to yourself out loud, "I will not to think about that." Do it as often as necessary and do it out loud.
Someone said, "That's easier said than done."
Not really. You have the innate authority to decide what you want to think about. If a thought is harmful to you, don't think that thought. It's your choice. As you make that choice again and again, your subconscious remembers how you like to respond and will start to make your response automatically. It's amazing how quickly this can happen.
Let me share three simple rules that you can use to teach your subconscious to help you even more to deal with your obesity:
  1. When you're tempted to step on the scale (another thought), say out loud to yourself, "I only weigh myself once a week." Set a time that's convenient, say Sunday morning before you dress for church. If you think about weighing yourself any other time, say "I only weigh myself once a week." This will keep you from being discouraged on the days when you don't show any weight loss.

  2. If you are hungry, you must eat. Say to yourself, out loud, whenever it crosses your mind (but at least several times a day), "I eat when I'm hungry and no other time." But you must be honest with yourself. There's a difference in true hunger and simply wanting to eat something. If you ate a meal an hour ago, it is not logical that you are hungry again. Use this rule as often as required.

  3. If the family is sitting down to eat or you're going out with friends and you're not hungry, get yourself a cup of tea or a flavored beverage and enjoy the company. Don't let well-meaning people coerce you into eating with them. Say, "I'm really not hungry and when I'm not hungry, I do not eat anything at all, regardless of when or where I am." Be kind; be cordial; but be firm with your friends and with yourself.
When you have the urge to eat and you know that you're not hungry, you can drink a bottle of water or a cup of tea to ease the desire to eat.
Say these three rules to yourself, out loud, several times a day. Before long, your subconscious will be dealing with your thoughts of eating automatically.
Don't give in to the temptation to try helper fads. Rule 1 keeps you from discouragement. Rule 2 assures that you're getting enough food for good health, and rule 3 lets you enjoy life with family and friends without feeling guilty. You don't need anything else to help you. You're capable of doing this all by yourself by teaching your subconscious to work with you.
As a bonus, allow yourself to be a little proud of yourself every time you use the rules.
Nothing could be more effective than having your subconscious mind control your impulse eating for you before you even think about it.

Why You Get Fat and Depressed - And What to Do About It

Over the years many clinical studies have shown that obesity and depression tend to be co-morbid. That means that they tend to occur together without necessarily having a cause and effect relationship. When conditions tend to occur together, scientists naturally want to explore exactly how they are connected. Does obesity cause depression? Does depression cause obesity? Could there be a third factor that is driving both conditions? These are important questions, because once we know the answers, we can better direct our research and treatment efforts.
I happen to believe that both obesity and depression are often driven by a third factor-our modern Western diet. It is now clear that excessive fructose mainly from sugar and high fructose corn syrup is the driving force behind insulin resistance and central obesity. When you have insulin resistance it takes more insulin to drive glucose into your cells and high insulin levels tend to trap fat inside of cells where it can't be used for energy. Recent evidence suggests that excessive fructose can alter your gut bacteria flora, further contributing to metabolic syndrome and obesity.
When you have insulin resistance and consume rapidly absorbed carbohydrates, especially from grains, you end up with magnified glucose spikes. Over time these glucose spikes can cause damage to your nerve cells, because unlike most of the cells in your body, neurons don't have an insulin gate. That's why diabetics tend to lose their nerve function and develop neuropathy long before other organs in their body are damaged.
Over time these toxic glucose spikes can trigger a form of diffuse brain dysfunction where your brain no longer functions as intended. The first symptom you experience when this happens is craving for sweet and starchy food, pushing you to consume more of the very food that is frying your brain. You also can develop mild brain dysfunction symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, mood swings and poor sleep. At this stage of brain dysfunction you don't yet have a disease because the symptoms are mild and variable. I refer to this pre-disease condition as "sugar-brain".
As time goes by, sugar-brain can transition to a true disease characterized by up to 22 distinct brain dysfunction symptoms that interfere with your ability to function in multiple settings. I now call this disease Carbohydrate Associated Reversible Brain syndrome or CARB syndrome. Because the brain plays a key role in auto-regulating fat stores, people with sugar-brain and CARB syndrome will start to store extra fat even as they diet and lose weight and lean body mass.
The symptoms of sugar-brain and CARB syndrome develop because people with these conditions have low levels of monoamine neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinphrine and serotonin in their brain. When these neurotransmitters are low, regardless of the reason why they are low, you end up with predictable symptoms. Some of these symptoms would easily qualify you for a diagnosis of depression.
It's important to remember what true hereditary depression looked like 100 years ago. At that time all patients with major depression felt depressed, lost their appetite and lost weight. There was no such thing as a "weight gain" type of depression. This situation has radically changed over the past 30-40 years. Today most patients diagnosed with depression feel depressed, have an increased appetite and carbohydrate cravings and weight gain. In my opinion this form of depression is CARB syndrome, not true major depression. Unfortunately the medical and scientific communities lump both types of depression into one category, when in fact they are dealing with two distinct diseases. Suffice it to say that the great majority of people diagnosed with depression today, in reality have a form of food-induced brain dysfunction called CARB syndrome.
A recent study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry by Dr. Mark Hamer titled
"Risk of future depression in people who are obese but metabolically healthy: the English longitudinal study of ageing" supports the view that obesity and depression are connect through metabolic parameters, not obesity per se.
Remember that there are really two types of obesity. The most common type is associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. This is the form of obesity that we tend to see with CARB syndrome. The second type of obesity is where a person has excessive body fat without any of these adverse metabolic markers. This type of obesity is seen when a person or lab animal is over-fed healthy food. If you give enough healthy food to any animal, they will eventually develop this type of obesity.
The type of obesity associated with sugar, HFCS and grain-based carbohydrates is not dependent on calories or over-feeding. Although people with this form of obesity always have excessive body fat, especially in the abdominal region, they may not be over-weight and they can sometimes even be thin. It's important to remember that obesity is defined as excessive body fat, so don't be fooled by someone's size or weight.
In this particular study they looked at the correlation between both types of obesity and depression. They wanted to know about the connection between depression and people with "metabolic obesity" and those who were obese but metabolically healthy. As it turns out people with metabolic issues were at an increased risk of later developing depression, whereas those who were obese without metabolic issues were not at an increased risk of developing depression. This is exactly what we would predict from the CARB syndrome disease model.
How does this information apply to you? I assume that most of you would rather not be obese or depressed. If insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are the gateway to most cases of obesity and many cases of depression, the best strategy would be to prevent metabolic problems or to treat them aggressively if you already have them. The best way to do so is to limit your intake of the dietary triggers of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome-sugar, HFCS and high glycemic carbohydrates, especially from grains.
Of course this describes most processed foods that form the core of the modern American diet. Learn to eat real food including meat, fowl, fish, seafood, vegetables and fruit. I'm not a big fan of milk because of its sugar content but a reasonable amount of cheese is acceptable. I would also limit your intake of legumes because of their anti-nutrient content. Some would recognize this as a Paleo-style diet. I simply call it a healthy diet.
If you learn to eat this way you will go a long way towards preventing the metabolic problems that seem to lead to many cases of obesity and depression. There are also many other common conditions that fall under the CARB syndrome umbrella. As with depression, we now believe that the diseases listed below can be triggered by eating these toxic dietary elements.
· ADHD
· PTSD
· Anxiety disorders
· Autism
· Eating disorders
· Fibromyalgia
· Irritable bowel syndrome
· Restless leg syndrome
· PMS
· Bipolar II

I think that it's really exciting that we have now made a connection between food and these common disorders. Think about it. What would you rather do-take handfuls of pills for the rest of your life living in a daze, or simply change your diet? This important study clearly shows the relationship between consuming certain foods and depression. In the years ahead I hope that we will see more studies looking at the impact of diet on common chronic diseases. Gary Taubes, author of the excellent books "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat" has started a non-profit organization called NuSi that is dedicated to funding such research. I plan on supporting Gary in his efforts and I encourage you to do so as well. I don't think that we can count on the agricultural or food industries to fund this type of research so we're on our own. If we are going to stay healthy, we need to stick together.
If you want to learn more about the role that excessive fructose plays in driving metabolic problems, I recommend that you read Richard Johnson's book "The Sugar Fix" or his excellent new book "The Fat Switch". It's never too late to learn and it's never too late to change. For the sake of your health and mental wellbeing, I suggest that you start today.

How Many Calories Should You Eat To Lose Weight?

If you want to lose weight it would make sense to know how many calories you need to consume just to maintain your weight. But how can we figure this out?
That's where your Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR steps in. Your BMR is the number of calories you would burn if you just sat on the sofa all day. If you know how many calories you burn just living, you will be able to calculate how many calories you need per day in order to maintain or adjust your body weight.
Make sense?
If you're eating clean and steering clear of booze, then you might not need to track your calories. However, if the scales or more importantly (in my book) your measurements are going down you may need to look at your calories in more detail, so that we can see exactly what is going on.
Once you have your BMR, you can use the equations below to multiply your BMR depending on your level of activity. This will give you a better understanding of the total calories you need to maintain your current weight.
Sedentary (very little or no exercise) = BMR x 1.2
Lightly Active (1-3 days/week of light exercise) = BMR x 1.375 (casually fit)
Moderately Active (3-5 days/week of moderate exercise) = BRM x 1.55 (team sports, frequent gym visitor)
Very Active (6-7 days/week of hard exercise) = BMR x 1.725 (semi-pro athlete, amateur body builder)
Extra Active (very hard exercising, physical job, or two-a-day training) = BMR x 1.9 (professional athlete, body builder)
Here's my example:
My BMR is 1922.59.
My activity factor is 1.55 as I am moderately active. 1922.59 x 1.55 = 2980.
2980 would be the amount of calories I would need each day in order to maintain my 185lbs (84kg/13 stone 2lbs) of body weight at my current activity level.
If you're unsure about your own current activity level I would perhaps look at calculating your maintenance calories based on a sedentary lifestyle or being lightly active. This will give you a base to work from and see to it that you're not over consuming calories. I'm assuming that the goal here is to burn excess lard, but if you're more concerned about maintaining your weight then, of course you'll want to know exactly how many calories you need with your current activity level.
Obviously this is a rough estimate, as it doesn't take into account muscle, body fat or bone density and should therefore be used as a guideline. However, it does give us a good basic idea of the calories needed to maintain our body weight at our current pace of life. From here we can then assess our actual calorie intake against our 'maintenance' level and adjust our intake accordingly.
I often see people lose weight earlier on when they start to exercise and sort out their diet, but as they progress they fail to reduce their calories for their new weight.

Weight Watchers Top 15 Tips And Tricks

Top 15 Way To Make Weight Watchers Work For You
Weight Watchers Tips & Tricks
I have to say that the years that I've been on and off Weight Watchers, it has ALWAYS worked for me! But it definitely requires some hard work and commitment.
So that being said here is my top 25 list of how I have succeeded on Weight Watchers.
1. Keep A Journal - This is a definite must! There is no way to keep track of everything without one. You must update your journal with all the foods/drinks you consume on a daily basis. Most of the time we tend to forget those few snacks that we had throughout the day. By always having your journal handy, write it down immediately whether it be just a few cookies or just a glass of wine.
2. Liquids - It's a great idea to always have a bottle of water with you all the time. This way you can just sip on water all day. And before you know it, you'll eventually have the 6 glasses of water that you should intake in 1 day. Sometimes when you feel hunger, it's not actually that you need food. You may just need some water. So this is a great tip if you just ate a snack, but it didn't quite fill your hunger. Being hydrated helps! And if water doesn't quite do it for you, have a diet soda, which it a little more sweet and may be more fulfilling than a plain old glass of water.
3. Food/Snacks - Find those low point snacks and stick to them! They will help throughout the day when you feel your belly asking you for some food. I personally like to have apples and carrots at work and home. Of course you don't need to only eat these. But that's just what I like for a low or zero point snack. It's OK to indulge in some sweets now and then, but make sure you know how many points that chocolate bar is.
4. Grocery Shopping - MAKE A LIST! And before you go grocery shopping, make sure you know the points values of the foods you buy before going to the supermarket. It's a good idea to write down the points values of the items you're going to by next to each item on your list. If something isn't on your list that you found in the supermarket, be sure to read those labels and serving sizes. Calculate those points!
5. Cooking - I like to stick to the healthier choices when cooking. For example, use I Can't Believe it's not butter instead of regular butter. Use fat free items such as fat free chicken broth. If you're having salad, there are many fat free dressings available in all types of varieties. Just be smart!
6. Weighing/Measuring Foods - Buy a scale! I recommend the Weight Watchers scale. It weighs in grams and in ounces. Of course you can use other scales, I just prefer to use the Weight Watchers scale. It's actually quite shocking to see a 4 oz. piece of steak on your plate and see how small it actually is.
7. Eating Out - Make healthy choices. If you do indulge yourself in your favorite dish that's 20+ points, a good thing to do is ask for a container as soon as you get your food. Put half into the container and save it for lunch tomorrow. And if you must have that piece of cheesecake for dessert, why not share with your friend instead of eating the entire slice yourself! And remember to follow my restaurant guide for the points and points plus values.
8. Friends & Family - Make sure to find a companion along the way to help you with your weight loss journey, even if this friend isn't on weight watchers. It makes it so much easier to stay on track if you have someone by your side rather than on your own. Tell your family you're on a diet so they don't force the extra helping of mashed potatoes on you! (My mom is notorious for doing things like this!)
9. Use The Calculator - Make some informed decisions and use the points calculator to figure out exactly how many points something is and don't just guess. Knowing how many points something is will help you make that decision if you think you are still hungry and want something more.
10. Exercise - This is one of the most important things to do if you want to shed those pounds even quicker. I know it's hard to go out and actually do it. But if you have your mind set and want to lose weight, this is the best thing for your body and health! It helps you not only lose weight but it with burn fat, build some muscle and even eat a little something extra with since you get a few additional points if you exercise. These are called Activity Points and these can be added to your daily intake. So the more you exercise, the more points you can get and the more you can eat! Of course, just be smart and don't think after an hour of exercising you should go home and eat whatever you want. All that exercising you just did, was worthless if you do this. It may help to eat a small protein within a half hour after exercising. This will help your body's metabolism work better.
11. Meetings/Support Groups - These will definitely help you along your journey. You can share your stories with other members and see how they're doing compared to you. It's not a contest, so don't get down on yourself if others are shedding pounds quicker than you. At these meetings be sure to talk to everyone and you'll get some great ideas for everything from low point snacks, to great restaurants to eat at. If you're doing this on your own and at home, join some forums and share your stories.
12. Weigh Ins - The dreaded weekly weigh-ins. I know it's hard to see that you only lost 1 pound or even gained 1 pound after eating healthy the entire week and exercising. Don't get discouraged and stick to it. Maybe you can try to change a few things that you've been eating. Or if you haven't been exercising, start!. But, once you get in the groove, you'll be eating better, and feeling healthier and those pounds will start falling off! Trust me!
13. Diet? - Don't think of yourself as always being on a diet. This is a lifestyle change! This is actually how you should be eating. Once you learn that, you'll feel as if you're not even dieting. If you feel like you're on a diet, you're already setting yourself up for failure. And once you know the points values right off the top of your head, it doesn't even feel like it's a diet. It become routine.
14. Just Live Your Life - Again, if you feel your dieting, it's not going to work. I know when you first start "dieting" you seem to be hungry ALL THE TIME. This will change once you get used to your new lifestyle. It's all about choices. Make the right choices for the foods you eat and when you go out to a restaurant. It's in your own hands.
15. The New You - You've stuck with it and it's working! That's great! Now keep it up and stay on track!
Good luck to everyone!

Smart Eating And Weight Loss

The pounds have piled up; the pants are getting too tight. It is high time to start losing off the extra weight. Planning right from the beginning makes it easier to succeed in your weight loss plans.
Keep track of what you eat and the type of exercise you do every single day. Write everything down in your journal. This gets things organized and you will be better motivated to continue on.
Cooking your own meals let you have total control over what to put into your body. No more extra oily, salty or sweet food from cafes and restaurants to tempt you and make you stray from your diet. Get some good cookbooks promoting healthy weight loss recipes, some basic cookware and you are well on your way to healthy cooking. You might be pleasantly surprised at the results.
When shopping for groceries, be sure to check the calories count and list of ingredients listed on the food packages. Do not be misled by advertisements such as natural, sugar-free and non-fried. Look at the fine prints. Every little bit counts towards your weight loss goals.
Eat smaller portions at each meal. Invest in smaller size plates to make sure you are not tempted to eat more. Less food on a bigger plate might give you the impression that you are not eating enough and end up taking more food. Just make sure you are having well-balanced meals, even though smaller portions.
The occasional deviation from your diet is no big deal. Being too strict might lead to stress and this is not good for your weight loss plans. You might get so frustrated and just give up. Stress can also lead to binge eating.
Sticking to the same old food day in and day out can be boring and uninspiring. Try healthy food from around the world right at home. Some of them can be easy to cook in your home kitchen.
Eating your main meals in front of the TV, work table or computer screen is a typical bad habit among some of us. It is difficult to be eating healthily this way and besides it is bad for your digestion. If you must be munching on some food while working, munch on carrot sticks instead.
Poor food choices, unhealthy snacks and too much fast and processed food not only lead to an expanding waistline but also clogged arteries. Taking control of the way you eat can lead to positive weight loss and a healthy body.

Obesity - The Truth

Recent statistics have proven that up to 75% of the population of the USA suffer from obesity. Are you one of the fat ones? Are you happy being fat?
Obesity does not happen overnight. It is a gradual process that takes control as your body suffers from the abuse inflicted upon it on a daily basis. The only people that benefit from this situation are the manufacturers of the fast food industry that causes the problem and the only guarantees of living this way is that your children will collect their inheritance much sooner than expected. With this in mind your family must be considered. The pain and grief that will be inflicted on them by your premature death can easily be avoided.
If you are one of these statistics and choose to ignore the media coverage of this condition it must be remembered that you live in the most powerful country in the world that can control almost anything except the spiralling weight of its population.
Needless to say, this is an embarrassment for all concerned and although there has been a great deal of successful research into many life threatening illnesses and complaints, getting the message across to the masses regarding the problems that can be caused by being obese is proving to be extremely difficult. The simple step of signing up to a weight loss program can make a vast difference and greatly improve your quality of life.
But there is only one person that can take you out of your comfort zone and that is yourself. By failing to take action you are settling for second best. Nothing is achieved without effort. The only way to overcome obesity is to change your way of life, starting by respecting the body you have been blessed with and the wishes of those nearest and dearest to you.
Eating healthily is one of the most important objectives that must be undertaken. By doing this you are reducing the intake of harmful fats and preservatives that are so commonly used in the manufacture of fast processed foods today.
Any exercise, regardless of how minimal, is far better than none at all. A steady walk, a gentle swim; either would be of great benefit. Furthermore, all of these actions could help to reduce your weight to an acceptable level. Additional help can be obtained by responding to weight loss tips and plans that are in place to help over weight people.
The time to take control of your life is now. Before it is too late and your mobility is taken away from you by one of the many serious illnesses that can be brought about by being obese. Do not become a burden to your loved ones by not taking control of your life. Improve the way you live and set an example to the younger members of your family.

Are You Using Food to Deal With Your Feelings?

In a world where the heart often rules over the head, you don't need a doctorate in psychology to realise that emotions are part of what we are.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. Whether it's cheering Ireland to sporting glory, sharing happy times with family or friends, or being moved by a standout musical performance, emotions often provide a foundation of positive feeling that will create treasured memories for years to come.
It's when emotions have a less positive aspect that problems can arise, not least as a result of the way we react and deal with negative feelings they generate. Never is this so true as when emotions affect they way we eat - or "emotional eating" as the phenomenon is generally known.
Most experts agreed that the term refers to people using food as a way to deal with their feelings rather than to satisfy their hunger, which in extreme cases can lead to compulsive overeating and food addiction.
It all sounds quite daunting but the truth is that emotional eating is something that most of us do from time to time, whether asking for another bowl of dessert in spite of feeling full or demolishing a pizza in front of the telly on a Friday night.
Don't worry if this sounds familiar. We wouldn't be human if we didn't enjoy the occasional blowout. It's when your feelings start to dictate your day-to-day diet that you need to consider whether your emotional eating is getting out hand.
It's important to be aware that while emotional eating can frequently be triggered by a bad experience, it can also be caused by a positive event. So while eating 'comfort food' in response to stress is a classic example of emotional eating, a celebratory dinner that leads excessive eating and drinking is another.
Whatever the trigger, the critical point is that if unchallenged, emotional eating can be a serious problem, resulting in an unhealthy diet and lifestyle leading to excessive weight or obesity, and all the associated health risks these bring.
If you think you are affected by emotional eating then take heart from the fact that you have taken the first step towards tackling the challenge by recognising it is an issue for you. Having done that, you can then start thinking about ways to break the cycle.
For example, consider how to reward, compensate yourself in ways that do not involve food. Keep a food diary to help you identify your eating triggers. Make it a habit to always "take five" before eating by taking a few moments to consider whether you are eating to satisfy genuine hunger, or simply to feed your emotional needs.
Even if you recognise that emotional eating is at the root of your weight problems, you may still need help to deal with it. Start by talking to your GP who will be able to advise you. Also consider contacting a reputable weight management clinic, where an expert consultant or adviser can discuss how to identify and tackle the triggers at the root of your emotional eating as part of a healthy weight management programme.

The Vital Components to Build Muscles Fast

Would you like to build muscles fast? Are you sick and tired of not experiencing noticeable lean muscle gains after sweating it out at the health club everyday? Is your dollars getting lost on dietary supplements which do not live up to their promises to bulk you up quickly?
In case you have responded yes to all these questions, you've found yourself in the right place. It is easy to get results fast and without burning a hole in your pocket. The only thing that is necessary is some true knowledge on muscle growth and common-sense.
High intensity is a must.
When you wish to build muscles fast you need to do super-intense routines. Your gym workout routines must make you sweat, and you also must optimize your time spent at the health club by making every moment effective. These intense routines put the body into a state of shock, and it begins adapting and reacting to the tension, which consequently allows you build muscles fast.
Protein is the building block of muscle tissue.
Keep a check on your current protein consumption, making sure you're getting enough of it in your daily diet. Proteins build muscle mass, and you'll be unable to build muscles fast unless you take in enough proteins each day.
Be sincere to your eating plan.
You might weaken your ability to grow muscles if you consistently consume food that's filled with empty calories. So get your calories from healthful resources. Calories are required to increase strength and stamina and to get results fast.
Stay well hydrated.
Do you know that 70 percent of the muscle is comprised of water? You must consume a lot of water. The important ingredient in any lifters diet plan is water. You should consume no less than 0.6 ounces of water for every single pound of bodyweight, everyday.
Get adequate rest.
The gym is not the place you build muscle mass. Your training session only breaks down the muscles tissue. Your actual muscle development process starts after the work out stops. Taking sufficient rest between workouts is vital if you want to build muscles fast. You need to avoid training everyday if you want to build muscles fast.
Get sufficient sleep.
In addition, you ought to have enough sleep at night as well as taking enough rest. To build muscles fast, it is suggested that you sleep for around eight hours every night. Insufficient sleep lowers your body's testosterone and growth hormone levels. Lack of sufficient sleep is going to reduce the intensity with which you work out and in addition make it difficult for you to adhere to your diet program. Good sleep raises your body's fat burning potential, helping you to have that ripped appearance that we all want and to build muscles fast.

Weight Loss Pills - How Do They Compare to Other Methods of Losing Weight?

While we always want to look our best, it's unfortunately impractical to be constantly getting pampered and having new haircuts which means we can only average out at a 'very good' level. Sometimes though we really do need to look as good as we can, whether it's for a wedding or for some other kind of occasion. Here we will look at how to look your very best for an event when you have some time to prepare.
Go to a Spa
Going to a spa can help you to look your best in a number of ways. Not only will going to a spa help you to feel relaxed and at ease (which people will be able to tell), but it will also help you to directly improve your skin and give you a healthy looking glow that you can only really get from having a proper facial and some time in a sauna. At the same time, some spas will also offer other beauty treatments such as pedicures and facials and these can further help to give you a complete look. And for women going to a spa will also force you to shave and wax - even if people don't see this you'll feel sexier and that will come across.
Makeup
For women the way you do your makeup will make a huge difference to how you look and feel. If you want to look your best then consider going to a makeup class where they can teach you the best colours to work with your skin tone - you might even be able to get your makeup done for free if you buy a few products from an apartment store. Otherwise, just go shopping and buy some products you really like and that are a higher standard than you might normally use.
Diet
If you have a week that's enough time to cut out a little water weight and to lose a pound or two to look even healthier. Don't starve yourself, but try to eat healthily and avoid excess calories and people might be able to notice a subtle difference in your face. Of course if you have a month or two then you can go further with this and really look much better as a result. Toning your body can also make a big difference.
Haircut
Getting a haircut shortly before the big occasion is one of the most important ways to make sure that you look as presentable as possible. Again you might want to try something different here - so ask your hair dresser if they have any advice. Don't cut too much off when experimenting though as it leaves you with no way to go back if you don't like it.
Clothes
For your clothes you have the option of going for your best outfit that you keep for such occasions, or of choosing something completely new. Either way, spend the week ahead trying out different outfits and shopping around for inspiration.
